Job Summary
Risk Management and Safety at Auburn University is excited to begin the search for a Safety and Health Technician! Under the direction of the Safety & Health Specialist, work in a team environment to perform necessary tasks to include regulated (hazardous, universal and medical) waste pickups, transportation, research, segregation and consolidation to assist AU in maintaining a favorable compliance status. The position may also be required to assist researchers with the successful shipments of dangerous goods. This position will also be asked to serve with others as part of the University's response team to mitigate emergencies involving the release of hazardous materials. Duties will involve a proactive approach towards communicating the program's regulated waste requirements to University faculty, staff and students and be performed in a professional and courteous manner.

Essential Functions

  • Waste Pickups and Scheduling: Individuals within this position will be primarily responsible for the scheduling and collection of regulated (hazardous, universal and medical) waste from various locations throughout campus. These efforts will be performed following all safety and regulatory protocols.
  • Waste Characterization, Segregation and Consolidation: Individuals within this position will be primarily responsible for the proper handling of regulated waste upon receipt. This position will be responsible for ensuring that all waste containers received are managed safely and in full compliance with applicable regulatory requirements while in storage. This position will follow direct guidance from supervisor to ensure the safe consolidation (bulking) of compatible waste.
  • Waste Procedure Consultation: Individuals within this position will need to communicate effectively the procedures for waste storage, handling and removal. Consultation will be done in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Central Accumulation Area & Equipment Maintenance: Individuals within this position will assist in maintaining the University's Central Accumulation Area (90 day waste storage area) in a manner to ensure continued compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements. Individuals within this position are expected to perform daily walk through compliance evaluations and equipment readiness checks to meet this need. Any deviations detected are to be addressed and/or communicated to supervisor immediately.
  • Hazmat Incident Response: Individuals within this position will be required to pass a pre-employment medical screening and respiratory fit test to ensure adequate physical condition to enable individual to respond as part of campus response unit to possible campus hazmat incidences. Medical screening and fit testing will be required annually thereafter.
  • Dangerous Goods Shipment Support: Individuals within this position may be required to assist research community with the shipment of dangerous goods. Shipments must be performed to fully comply with all DOT/IATA requirements.
  • Pathological Waste Management Support: Individuals in this position may be asked to assist personnel in the management of pathological waste (animal carcasses) as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications
Level I - High school diploma or equivalent

Level II - High school diploma or equivalent plus 1 year of experience in safety and health practices

Level III - High school diploma or equivalent plus 4 year of experience in safety and health practices

Substitution allowed for Experience:
Degrees accepted in lieu of experience for advanced levels, at a rate of 1 year relevant education per year of required experience. Example: Associate's degree = 2 years of experience

  • Able to communicate effectively and in multiple formats (spoken and written) to a
