The School of Public Health at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a (Hybrid) College Recruitment Specialist.

About the Opportunity

This position initiates and manages WVU School of Public Health (SPH) activities focused on student and alumni outreach, engagement, and diversity. The student affairs outreach coordinator works under the supervision of the Director of Career Development and Student Success, who also serves as the Advisor for the Student Association for Public Health (SAPH) and Alumni Affairs and is the liaison for faculty resource needs related to student performance. This position will support the Office of Academic and Student Affairs to implement the school's strategic plans for student and alumni affairs, K-12 outreach and for gender and ethnic diversity advancement in its active and former student body. As part of these duties and responsibilities the student affairs outreach coordinator will work closely with the school's Directors of Undergraduate and Graduate Programs, Director of Admissions and Recruitment, Enrollment Specialist, Academic Advisors, and the Director of Communication, to coordinate SPH internal and outreach initiatives with those of the Health Sciences Center (HSC) and University. To successfully accomplish his/her responsibilities, the student affairs outreach coordinator will interact with SPH Deans, Department Chairs, program directors, and faculty who are involved with student outreach and diversity activities and efforts.

What you'll do:



  • Develop and administer multiple SPH outreach activities consistent with WVU initiatives and the School's strategic plans for improving the student and alumni engagement with the school
  • Develop, implement, and manage student and alumni outreach for the School. This will include working with prospective and current students and recent and long-term alumni.
  • Coordinate with the Director of Undergraduate Studies with K-12 outreach to middle schools, high schools and other K-12 constituencies including to create, plan, and advertise various events.
  • Assist the Director of Strategic Education and Diversity with diversity, equity, and inclusion mandates, resources, and collaboration with established groups.
  • Proactively build strategic relationships both within WVU and the community to establish and develop an external and community facing outreach mission.
  • Interact with SPH Directors of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies, Director of Admissions and Recruitment to see that outreach efforts are aligned with SPH recruiting and retention efforts/activities and are in concert with the University's expectations and enhance the gender, minority and socio-economic diversity of undergraduate and graduate student prospect pools.
  • Engage and advise student organizations to ensure they are following established policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate financial aid, scholarships, foundation, and legacy funding under the supervision of the Director of Career Development and Student Success.
  • Coordinate New Student Orientation (NSO) and retention events.
  • Monitor trends in alumni success and engage alumni in SPH events and activities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations or related field.
  • A minimum of one (1) year experience:

    • Prospective undergraduate student outreach and student prospect development, with a particular focus on priority student populations, K-12, and/or transfer students.
    • Working with students, teachers and educational professionals at both the high school and college/university levels.
    • Familiarity with and experience in student Affairs in an academic setting.


  • Ability to develop and execute a variety of strategies and models to increase SPH performance in areas of student and alumni engagement, high school outreach, enrollment yield rates, year over year retention rates for different majors and student ranks, placement and six-year graduation rates and trends.\
  • Ability to develop, manage and use databases and/or other computer and web-based software tools involved with handling highly confidential student information.
  • Ability to prepare technical reports and give computer-based presentations to student/family groups, SPH and HSC administrators, and other constituent groups.
  • Ability and demonstrated knowledge of event planning.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to develop constructive relationships with a variety of constituents.
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on projects.
  • Group organization, leadership and implementation of outreach initiatives to meet strategic planning objectives.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills in order to effectively engage and assist students, parents and faculty.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain knowledge of all SPH programmatic and departmental admission standards and benchmarks
  • Highly proficient knowledge of spreadsheets and/or relational databases (e.g. Excel and Access).
  • Must be able to develop strong relationships and work with students, parents, High School teachers and counselors and other levels of educational professionals.
  • Ability to identify and adapt the SPH brand in relation to SPH's and WVU's mission and vision
  • Ability to create and maintain databases to track college-wide internship and experiential learning initiatives
  • Demonstrated ability to pay attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to write clearly following conventions of standard American prose, and to adapt style to the medium and context
  • Ability to work occasional weekends and evenings and travel outside the state
  • Ability to assess and enhance the effectiveness of outreach and engagement efforts and adapt plans and activities to match these trends
  • Ability to represent the college in a professional manner
