General Notes

This position is for one year from the hire date, with potential for renewal contingent on performance and funding.

This position may perform work both in-person and remotely, as determined by supervisor and the needs of the college. This position will occasionally be required to work additional hours or weekends as needed to complete time-sensitive projects or experiment-related procedures.

Purpose

The Research Associate reports to Dr. Regina Mangieri in the Division of Pharmacology and Toxicology to perform research funded by the National Institute of Mental Health and National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism to investigate the neurobiological mechanisms of pathological aggression and aggression-alcohol interactions. The person in this position will be responsible for performing research combines brain slice electrophysiology and circuit-based approaches with behavioral testing and pharmacology.

Responsibilities

  • Planning and execution of research projects. The person in this position is expected to contribute intellectually to the project and will have a reasonable degree of freedom to develop their own research niche. The person in this position will collaborate closely with the PI on all aspects of their project, including literature review, developing and refining experiments, pilot-testing and equipment set-up, data acquisition, data management and analysis.

  • Writing of results and creation of materials (e.g., figures, tables) for presentation and publication.

  • Train or guide junior members in the lab.

  • Additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a relevant field and at least three years postdoctoral research experience.

  • Experience and demonstrated proficiency in at least one of the following: rodent behavioral testing, brain slice whole-cell patch clamp electrophysiology, and/or rodent stereotaxic surgery.

  • Strong problem-solving and time management skills, as well as excellent collegiality are required.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. or equivalent degree in neurophysiology or neuropharmacology and at least two years demonstrated experience (can be pre- or post-doctoral) in performing brain slice whole-cell patch clamp electrophysiology and/or rodent (especially mouse) stereotaxic surgery.

  • Experience with rodent (especially mouse) models of social behavior and/or self-administration paradigms.

  • Experience with techniques relevant to brain histological evaluation (e.g., tissue slicing, microscopy).

  • Ideal candidates will have a record of scientific presentations and published scientific research that demonstrates advanced methodological skills and proficiency in scientific writing.

Salary Range

$61,000+ depending on qualifications

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
