Position title:
Geomorphic Watershed Analyst (Assistant Project Scientist)
Salary range:
Commensurate with qualifications and experience. The posted UCSC Salary Scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the scale titled, Represented Project ___ (E.G., Scientist) Series Fiscal Year. "Off-scale salaries", i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions. A reasonable estimate for this position is $82,100 - $90,000.
Percent time:
Variable, 25% - 100%
Anticipated start:
As soon as possible after the initial review of applications.
Position duration:
Initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

Position description

The Zimmer Lab in the Earth and Planetary Sciences Department at the University of Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applicants for a *Geomorphic Watershed Analyst. Under the supervision of Assistant Professor Magaret Zimmer, the analyst will study geomorphology and land-use dynamics instrumented research at the Blue Oak Ranch Reserve watershed. The majority of the candidate's work will be performed in Santa Cruz but will occasionally include visits to Blue Oak Ranch Reserve in San Jose, California.

The key job responsibilities will include using drones and postprocessing software to create 3D topographic and multispectral data. The selected applicant will be responsible for analysis of this topographic and multispectral data, geomorphic watershed analysis, field support, and planning for post-fire data collection.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate experience with hydrologic and geomorphic landscape processes and the creation, analysis, and interpretation of high-resolution topographic data.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

  • Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in earth sciences or geomorphology.
  • A minimum of five years' research experience that relates to the advertised position.
  • Demonstrated experience with topographic and multispectral data, post fire data collection, and drones.
  • Demonstrated experience and familiarity with the Blue Oak Ranch UCNRS Reserve study site in San Jose California.
