Job Summary:
The Assistant Director of Outdoor Education and Leadership (OEL) will help lead and support a growing and vibrant Outdoor Education program including the Adventure Trips Program, Bison Bikes Rental Program, Buckwild first year orientation program, ClimBucknell, the Climbing Program, Rental and Outfitting Center. Serving an active campus community, OEL is committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging and providing all students with access to the outdoors.

The Assistant Director of OEL reports to the Director of OEL and has the following direct reports: OEL students and managers.

Job Duties:

Program Leadership, Development, and Oversight

Provide leadership and oversight of the Rental and Outfitting Center, Bison Bike Rental Program, and Adventure trips program

Collaborate Leadership and Coordination

Provide collaborative leadership, coordination, and support of the Adventure Trips Program, Buckwild first year orientation programming, and ClimBucknell - climbing program, indoor climbing wall, outdoor bouldering park, and challenge course facility.

Risk Management and Crisis Management

Assist the Director and OEL Associate Director in the implementation of best practices and oversight of risk management for OEL. Including but not limited to:
  • Emergency Action Plan (EAP)
  • Planning and oversight of trips and programs
  • Development and implementation of policies, procedures, and trainings
  • Maintain a satellite and other communication and on-call structure for all necessary programs


Administration and Planning

Administrative duties such as program registration, responding to emails, budget management, documenting staff hours, equipment log, facility inspection and more. Provide collaborative leadership in the planning and implementation of the Outdoor Education & Leadership Strategic Vision. Engage in regular discussions regarding program and OEL asset development.

Requested Programs, Outreach, and Marketing

Work with the OEL Director and Associate Director to collaborate with students and campus partners to plan and implement requested programs, team building, and group initiative programs. Assist with Outdoor Education & Leadership marketing and outreach initiatives

Perform other duties as required.

WORK SETTING

On campus with Hybrid opportunities over summer break.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's Degree in Outdoor Recreation Leadership, Outdoor Experiential Education, Recreation and Park Management, Environmental Studies or related field.
  • One year of work experience in an outdoor education field or setting.
  • Technical experience, including teaching experience and risk management knowledge, of at least two of the following: whitewater kayaking or rafting; flat water canoeing, kayaking or paddle boarding; 3 to 4 season backpacking; caving; rock or ice climbing; mountaineering; backcountry skiing or snowboarding; mountain biking; cross country skiing; international or domestic travel with groups.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion through programming, trainings/workshops or mentoring.
  • Working knowledge of equipment rental inventory software systems and direct experience with outdoor equipment rental center operations.
  • Marketing skills, computer skills (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Google Apps).
  • Valid driver's license plus the ability to drive oversized hauling vehicles with trailers.
  • Budget management experience.
  • Ability to effectively work with multiple constituencies, organize and manage tasks


Professional Certification or License (or willingness to work towards): Wilderness First Responder, CPR/AED Certification, Climbing Wall Instructor, ACCT Level 1.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in Higher Education, Outdoor Recreation Leadership, Outdoor Experiential Education, Recreation and Park Management, Environmental Studies or related field.
  • 2-3 years of work experience in an outdoor education field or setting.
  • Experience working with students in a collegiate setting.
  • Challenge course facilitation experience with a variety of populations.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Proficiency in outdoor technical rock climbing, both bottom and top site management and lead climbing.
  • Experience or knowledge of outdoor orientation programming


Professional Certification or License: Certification in one or more of the preferred industry certifications such as, AMGA SPI, PCIA, Avalanche Certifications, Wilderness Medical Instructor, ACCT Challenge Course Manager Certification, ACCT Level II, Swift Water Rescue Technician, American Canoe Association Canoe / Kayak Instructor, Licensed Inspector for PA Agricultural Rides and Amusements.

The offer rate will be based on a review of the candidate's credentials compared to the qualifications of the position, internal equity, and our overall compensation philosophy.

This role is not budgeted for visa sponsorship at this time, all candidates must be authorized to work in the US at the time of submission of the application.
