Summary:

As an integral member of the Tax team, the Staff Accountant will be responsible for preparing various types of state and local tax and information returns along with research and other analysis.

This position reports to the Manager, Tax and is located at HHMI's headquarters. They will report in-person 1 day a week to Chevy Chase, MD.

What you'll do:

  • Prepare state and local filings, including sales & use tax returns, personal property tax reports, unclaimed property returns, income tax returns, quarterly income tax estimates, business license applications and renewals, and annual reports.

  • Maintain state and local tax exemptions.

  • Respond to notices or correspondence from state and local tax authorities.

  • Assist with tax-related General Ledger account reconciliations and other projects.

  • Perform state and local tax analysis, research and monitor changes in laws and regulations.

  • Analyze current processes and leverages systems (Workday, Ariba, Avalara Tax, K1x/Ctrac) to ensure process improvement opportunities are fully realized.

  • Participate in other projects or duties as required, such as assisting with federal filings, such as Form 990/990-T, Federal Reserve and Census Bureau reports.

What you bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting; Master's degree in Accounting or Tax is a plus.

  • Two to five years of relevant experience in tax.

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred.

  • Experience with state and local tax filings and business licenses a plus.

  • Experience with exempt organization taxation a plus.

  • Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Technical skills: Microsoft Office Suite (particularly Excel, including Pivot tables, complex formulas, and Power Query), Workday or other ERP system, Ariba, K1x/CtracUses

  • Strong time management skills and the ability to prioritize tasks.

Physical Requirements:

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet).

Compensation Range

$72,382.40 (minimum) - $90,478.00 (midpoint) - $117,621.40 (maximum)

Pay Type:

Annual

HHMI's salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
