General Purpose of Job: The primary function of this role is to reduce the number of laboratory submissions that cannot be resulted through our normal workflow. This is to be accomplished by identifying problematic orders and/or specimens, defining factors that prevent the lab from producing the expected patient results, verifying that we are meeting the International Organizational Standards (ISO), and resolving issues through process improvements, corrective actions, education, training, and maintaining electronic databases. Essential Duties: This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.
- Identifies laboratory orders that cannot be resulted through our normal workflow. This may be done through Problem Identification Forms (PIFs), Orange Notes, Say Something, patient and/or caregiver complaints, and other means.
- Resolves issues related to specific laboratory submissions that cannot provide the desired laboratory result. Resolutions should be made to the benefit of the patient and with a goal of providing the desired laboratory results to the requesting provider. After exhausting other alternatives and communicating with the ordering provider as needed, contacts patient for recollection.
- Analyzes trends among laboratory submissions that cannot be resulted through our normal workflow. Identifies root causes and works with leadership to resolve problems on both the individual and system level.
- Participates in audits and corrective actions according to the Sparrow Laboratory Quality Manuel (International Organizational Standards).
- Maintains and updates the provider directory in the Lab's electronic databases. Works billing error queues as assigned. Analyzes error queues and identifies issues that result in delayed billing or unpaid claims. Identifies root causes of billing errors and works with leadership to resolve problems on both the individual and system level.
- Provides individual feedback to caregivers, creates training materials, conducts training in-person and via electronic means, and makes recommendations to leadership regarding systemic improvements.
- Communicates, in accordance with the ICARE values, with ordering providers, patients, and caregivers.
- Documents all investigation, resolution, and follow up information in the designated complaint tracking system and ensures compliance with all required regulations.
- Writes and updates policies and procedures as directed by leadership.
- Participates in ensuring that the Lab meets the requirements of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
- Serves as a role model for consistent demonstration of Sparrow Health System's Customer Service Behavioral Standard of Performance by respecting the Privacy and Confidentiality of those we serve.
- Follows established HIPAA privacy procedures when using and/or disclosing protected health information.

* High school diploma/GED and a minimum of 5 years' experience in clinical laboratory setting OR an Associate's degree in health care or related field and a minimum of 3 years' experience in Clinical Laboratory setting. |
