Executive Director

The Executive Director provides overall visionary and managerial leadership to the affiliate in accordance with the directives, policies and objectives set by the affiliate board of directors. The Executive Director accepts the covenant of Habitat for Humanity and is a leading advocate of the affiliate regarding fulfilling the mission and vision statements. The Executive Director is a nonvoting, ex-officio member of the board of directors.

II. Position Description

Reports to: Executive Committee of the Board of Directors specifically and to the Board of Directors overall. The Executive Committee will solicit input from the entire Board of Directors in performing an annual review of the Executive Director.

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and a minimum of three (3) years' experience in not-for-profit management or other relevant management experience. Experience in affordable housing development and/or mortgage lending preferred.

Requirements/ Skills: Must be able to articulate the organization's mission, values, and goals. Must be organized, able to meet deadlines, and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Must possess the ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation are required. Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field, including training provided by HFHI.

III. Responsibilities

General Administration
  • Act as the chief administrator responsible for managing all aspects of affiliate and ReStore operations.
  • Manage the affiliate office by directing, training, supervising, and recognizing the paid and volunteer staff in the performance of assigned duties.
  • Serve as the Human Resource Director by ensuring the proper hiring and dismissal of staff, as well as, overseeing any complaints.
  • Establish office procedures, guidelines and performance standards.
  • Provide for regular office hours.
  • Maintain a climate which attracts, keeps, and motivates staff and volunteers.
  • Ensure that the organization has the necessary infrastructure to carry out the mission.
  • Ensure that appropriate and timely communication flows among all stakeholder groups, internally and externally.
  • Ensure the affiliate adheres to government regulations and HFH International policies.
  • Ensure proper maintenance of all affiliate properties to include the ReStores and the Construction Warehouse building.


Financial Management
  • Responsible for the development and maintenance of sound financial practices.
  • Interact with the finance committee to ensure completion of audits and other financial activities, to include annual 990 filings, sales tax payables, and annual filings.
  • Maintain confidential employee and Partner Family applicant records for the affiliate.
  • Work with the staff, Executive Committee, and board in preparing a yearly budget. Ensure that the affiliate operates within budget guidelines.
  • Responsible for overall homeowner mortgage origination and mortgage servicing to include collection of payments, managing delinquencies, foreclosures, and appropriate escrow management.
  • Ensure that adequate funds are available to permit the organization to carry out its mission. This includes development and/or oversight of a resource development plan and effective grant seeking and grant management.
  • Ensure proper accounts receivable and accounts payable bookkeeping for all affiliate and ReStore programs.
  • Monitor the administrative cost to total cost ratio and act to ensure the ratio is kept at a level consistent with local and HFHI guidelines.

Committee support and guidance
  • Work with the Board of Directors to ensure proper committee structure and meeting cadences.
  • Assist the committee chairs and provide communication flow among committees, staff, volunteers, and the board as appropriate.
  • Monitor the progress of all committees and support their efficient operation.
  • As appropriate, attend committee meetings and assist committee members in completing their duties.


Board Support
  • Work with Board President to prepare an agenda for board meetings and Executive Committee meetings.
  • Assist the board of directors in making fundamental decisions, preparing strategic plans and creating/maintaining policies.
  • Work with the board to establish which decisions the board wants to be consulted for and which decisions should be left to staff and committees.
  • Assist in the recruitment and training of board members.
  • Serve as the liaison between the board and the staff; between Habitat for Humanity International and the board; between Habitat for Humanity of Florida and the board.

Construction, Site Selection and Project Management
  • Assist the Board of Directors, Land Acquisition & Site Selection Committee and Construction Team with coordinating current and future affiliate builds.
  • Oversee the affiliate's property portfolio and make recommendations regarding land inventory.
  • Oversee the recruitment and retention of construction volunteers.
  • Serve as the project manager, overseeing the construction budgets, timeline, partners, and subcontractors for all projects.
  • Oversee the acquisition of buildable land.
  • Oversee master planning and design of projects.
  • Work with the construction team to ensure proper permitting of all affiliate projects.
  • Work with municipalities to ensure code compliance.

Community Relations, Advocacy and Resource Development
  • Serve as spokesperson for the affiliate.
  • Actively participate with appropriate community groups which share the goals of HFH.
  • Establish and nurture good media relationships.
  • Oversee production of publications and promotional materials.
  • Ensure that the activities of the affiliate, its programs and goals are publicized.
  • Advocate for affordable housing at the local, state, and national levels.
  • Work with affiliate staff to implement Advocacy Toolkit, in line with national and state Habitat guidelines.
  • Establish sound working relationships and cooperative arrangements with volunteers, home sponsors, partner families, community groups and other organizations.
  • Seek, apply, and oversee grants.

ReStore
  • Oversee the operations of ReStores.
  • Work with the ReStore Manager(s) to ensure appropriate staffing of the stores.
  • Work with the ReStore Manager(s) to monitor and support donation acquisition.
  • Work with the ReStore Manager(s) to ensure proper reporting to all applicable entities.
