Today, our foundry is developing over 40 different organisms to make different products across multiple industries.

With exclusive access to automated foundries for biological engineering, Ginkgo Bioworks is delivering the scale and power of synthetic biology to agriculture through its AgBio department. Our goal is to support the ag industry's sustainability efforts, starting with reducing the environmental impact of nitrogen fertilizer.

We're searching for a highly skilled and motivated Scientist with expertise in Gram positive bacteria to characterize, engineer and develop screening R&D processes aimed at improving Gram-positive environmental microorganisms for large scale commercial agriculture applications.

As a successful applicant, you are able to perform strain engineering activities, including strain design, DNA/strain construction, pathway optimization, evaluation of strain performance and troubleshooting.

You have demonstrated experience owning and delivering technical milestones under defined timelines. As a driven and organized team member, you are flexible and can adapt to the changing demands of a fast-paced environment. Internal Title is Organism Engineer 2.

Responsibilities:



  • Leverage Ginkgo Foundry services for DNA synthesis and assembly, sequencing, strain verification, and coordinate HTP screening campaigns.
  • Automate and scale strain engineering workflows.
  • Register strains and track strain lineages using Organick and compile interstate permit applications.
  • Work closely with project team members in designing and executing experiments to engineer and optimize metabolic pathways in various Gram-positive organisms.
  • Collaborate with other functional teams across the AgBio division to execute and advance project goals.
  • Champion the expansion of Ginkgo Bioworks capabilities by exploring new technologies and strategies to improve experimental throughput and support automation efforts.
  • Record, analyze, share, and present data within the company with high integrity, quality and clarity.
  • Communicate engineering strategies to project team members.
  • Contribute to Technical Project Plans when presented with the opportunity.


Minimum Requirements:



  • BS in bacterial metabolic engineering, microbiology, microbial physiology, molecular biology and/or related fields is required for consideration.
  • +2 years of experience in an industry laboratory setting working as part of a multidisciplinary team; or an advanced degree without experience; or equivalent work experience.
  • Hands-on experience with employing synthetic biology tools for development of industrially relevant microbial hosts.
  • Strong attention to detail and level of efficiency and organization with laboratory work.
  • Excellent communication, problem solving, and data analysis skills.
  • Background in nitrogen fixation pathway and genetic regulation preferred.


Preferred Capabilities and Experience:



  • Demonstrated ability to reach targeted goals through design, construction, and testing of strains and metabolic pathways.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to quickly learn and perform in new areas, implement new techniques and instruments.
  • Ability to work with interdisciplinary teams and in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
  • Ability to effectively interface with custom and commercial LIMS systems and utilize software tools for sample and workflow management.
  • Experience writing scripts for data analysis.
  • Enthusiasm for being a part of Ginkgo's mission.
