About the role

TheControl Room Operatorleads and directs employees who, under the direction of the shift Supervisor, oversee and direct the operation of the facility. This position is responsible for monitoring the status of all plant systems on a continuous basis. Will respond to alarms by taking appropriate corrective actions and execute plant shut-down and start-up procedures and ensure that the plant meets its generating requirements while operating in a safe and environmentally efficient manner.

Responsibilities include:

  • Controls operation of station systems including but not limited to: steam generation, condensate, feed water, turbine/generator, circulating water, service water, fuel handling, ash handling, electrical, fire protection, air pollution control and various computer networks.
  • Understands and trains other Operators on the operating principles of the power facility's systems, components and steam cycles.
  • Reads and interprets meters, gauges, recorders and annunciators to determine system operating conditions; takes action within prescribed normal and emergency station operating procedures.
  • Adjusts and monitors temperatures, pressures, flow and levels on station primary system components for plant optimization.
  • Initiates and conducts periodic surveillance tests on station operating safety checks and tests on station operating conditions, takes action within prescribed normal, abnormal and emergency station operating procedures.
  • Maintains required logs and calculations; observes these logs for indications of faulty operation; notifies supervisor of abnormal system conditions.
  • Monitor operation of station systems and components including pumps, motors, valves, fans, dampers, grates, augers, conveyors, dust collections, etc.
  • Monitors operability of fire protection systems, emergency backup equipment, electrical supply equipment and instrumentation associated with station systems and components.
  • Monitoring air pollution control equipment
  • Accurately reading and recording data, and reporting equipment malfunctions or trends, which indicate possible equipment danger
  • Identifying and correcting abnormal operating conditions or emergency situations

Position Requirements:

To be considered for the position, the individual must have three years directly related power industry experience with progressive technical and supervisory responsibilities and possess:

* Associate's Degree in a technical field or equivalent work experience, coupled with basic computer, blueprint, P&ID, schematic specifications and vendor requirement reading experience.

* Strong leadership and excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to problem solve and make good decisions.

* The capability to manage critical events and prioritize in an emergency, providing clear direction in operational, safety, and environmental tasks.

* The ability to manage operations crew personnel; work in closed quarters and confined spaces; climb ladders and structures; lift and carry up to 50 pounds; and tolerate heights and high temperatures.

* Thorough understanding, of the Auxiliary Operator and Control Room Operators' duties and responsibilities, and be capable of standing watch in any of these subsidiary positions.

* A valid driver's license.

The candidate must also be able to obtain the ASME's QRO Provisional Certification within six months and pass the test within 12 months.

The expected hourly rate for this position is $40.57. This is a good-faith estimate of what we expect to pay for this position. The final salary figure will take into account a variety of factors including experience, ability, and location. Covanta is committed to paying its staff equitably, and these ranges should not be considered career salary limits or caps.
