Description

Discovery Biology Group at FMC Corporation, has an immediate opening for a motivated Associate Investigator to work in our FMC Stine Research Center Newark, Delaware research facility. The successful candidate will be responsible for management of on-site seed inventory, acquisition of seeds from relevant sources to support agrochemical discovery, evaluation of seed samples for purity, viability, vigor, and ensuring overall quality of crop and weeds seed lots used for discovery bioassay testing. The position requires working independently and in collaboration with other Research Associates and Principal Investigators in the Discovery Biology Team. The goal of Discovery Biology team at FMC is to discover novel agrochemicals, optimization and characterization of safe and sustainable new weed control technologies for Global agriculture

Working in a team environment, the successful candidate will have job responsibilities, which include but are not limited to:




  • Managing on-site seed inventory using FMC inventory & work management software program. Keeping track of changes in seed requirements across multiple bioassay screens and disciplines (herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, and nematicides) to support research and maintain requisite inventory.
  • Acquiring crop and weed seeds from relevant resources to ensure robust seed inventory capable of supporting agrochemical research efforts without interruptions. Identifying, contracting and overseeing outside propagation of needed varieties that are no-longer commercially available.
  • Ensuring quality and robustness of back-up and in production seed lots to warrant accuracy and reliability of bioassays used in discovery. This involves but is not limited to crop and weed seed testing for viability, germination, purity, and vigor.
  • Assisting in coordination and execution of bridge testing of all seed lots.
  • Leading and coordinating in-house propagation of certain species for seed production as needed. This encompasses functions from seeding and propagation to cleaning of harvested seed.
  • Assisting with projects aimed at new plant variety/biotype selection for testing in collaboration with fellow associates and principal investigators.
  • Collecting and summarizing data on seed and plant growth studies to support process improvement projects.
  • Supervising associate seed technologist and other team members who support the seed technology competency. Identifying and training new team members to ensure all groups receive adequate support of research objectives.


Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:



  • M.S. in Biological Sciences or B.S. with at least 5 years of work experience in similar role in academia or industry.
  • Possession and maintenance of a powered industrial truck certification.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs
  • Strict observance and adherence to required and approved safety procedures.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including writing and maintaining standard operating procedures and group presentations of experimental results.
  • Strong track record of accomplishment.
  • Good computer skills with an understanding of MS Windows Operating System and typical MS Office suite applications as well as applications such as Outlook and other databases.
  • Willingness to work in a group of diverse people while supporting team members to meet team objectives. As appropriate, possess the ability to work independently.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and proactive attitude to develop strong and reliable partnerships.
  • Knowledge and ability to utilize greenhouse and growth chamber settings to manage operational variables for improved impact on plant propagation will be beneficial.
