Senior Scientist, RNA and Biologics Analytics

Ginkgo Bioworks
United States, Massachusetts, Boston
27 Drydock Avenue (Show on map)
April 12, 2024

Our mission is to make biology easier to engineer. Ginkgo is constructing, editing, and redesigning the living world in order to answer the globe's growing challenges in health, energy, food, materials, and more. Our bioengineers make use of an in-house automated foundry for designing and building new organisms.

The Analytics team comprises talented analytical and bioanalytical chemists dedicated to providing efficient and precise analytical characterization methods spanning various applications. Situated at the junction of high throughput screening, fermentation, and downstream processing, our team plays a pivotal role in characterizing engineered strains, target biomolecules, and processes crucial to Ginkgo's mission of making biology easier to engineer. Leveraging cutting-edge software, automation, and analytical instrumentation, we develop methods of low, medium, and high throughput to cater to diverse application needs.

An essential technology driving our Mammalian RNA projects is the capability to generate circular RNA that fulfills crucial quality criteria necessary for large-scale functional studies. Historically, achieving this has posed significant challenges for the entire RNA industry, and Ginkgo is actively seeking solutions to overcome this hurdle. Central to achieving scalable circular RNA production is the development and implementation of analytical capabilities that can efficiently characterize and promptly report on key quality attributes. This facilitates rapid iteration on process optimization and discovery endeavors. As a Senior Analytics Engineer, you will contribute to the development and implementation of analytical methodologies for the characterization of RNA-based products. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure the quality, purity, and stability of RNA molecules throughout the development lifecycle.

Responsibilities

  • Enhance current and contribute to the validation of novel approaches utilizing HPLC, mass spectrometry, and electrophoretic techniques for the comprehensive characterization of RNA and other macromolecules of interest
  • Participate in comprehensive inquiries, involving the evaluation of alternative methods, understanding the stability of RNA, proteins, and peptides, and analyzing impurities.
  • Optimize and validate analytical and bioanalytical methods for the characterization of RNA molecules, including but not limited to purity, identity, integrity, and stability assessments.
  • Perform routine and non-routine analytical testing to support process development, formulation, and manufacturing activities.
  • Analyze and interpret analytical data, and prepare comprehensive reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders
  • Keep abreast of emerging trends and technologies in RNA analytical development and incorporating best practices into laboratory workflows
  • Champion high throughput analytical testing approaches via the use of automation and robotics. Provide feedback and requirements to expand and improve upon software/data tools.
  • Participate in laboratory maintenance activities, including equipment calibration, troubleshooting, and inventory management
  • Work with other team members to drive standardization, quality processes, and documentation toward improving our analytical infrastructure.
  • Provide training and mentorship to junior scientists as required. May have formal people management responsibilities.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field with over 7 years of relevant experience, a Master's degree with at least 5 years of industry experience, or a Ph.D. with a minimum of 3 years of industry experience.
  • Extensive expertise in RNA, protein, and peptide analysis particularly in biopharmaceutically relevant contexts.
  • Proficient in a wide range of analytical assays, with a strong focus on LC-MS, capillary electrophoresis and HPLC (essential).
  • Skilled in analyzing and interpreting various forms of written material, including tables, spreadsheets, and both quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Proven ability to produce and communicate clear and concise reports and presentations.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy, ensuring fast turnaround times to meet project deadlines.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to manage tasks efficiently.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication abilities.
  • Excellent collaborative skills and adeptness at working in a fast-paced setting.

Preferred Capabilities and Experience

  • Experience managing individual contributors in industry
  • Possess a mindset focused on continuous learning and improvement.
  • Capable of working autonomously with minimal supervision and as part of a team within a dynamic environment.
  • Experience with applying analytical strategy that integrates industry best practices and aligns with health authority expectations for the advancement RNA therapeutics
  • Knowledge of LEAN (or other organizational methodologies) to improve process efficiency and quality is a plus.
