Project/Unit Description

The Applied Systems Laboratory (ASL) Systems Integration Division (SID) supports systems integration, system design, and product development projects for the Department of Defense (DoD) manned and unmanned systems. SID research military systems specializing in avionics, electronic warfare, autonomous systems, intelligence systems, and tactical communication/datalink systems. The SID team's engineering roles include Systems Engineering, Algorithm Engineering, Datalink Engineering, and Embedded Software Engineering.

Job Purpose

The Model-Based Systems Engineer (MBSE) develops and executes novel system model-based approaches to define, design, analyze, and document system development. The MBSE Researcher applies MBSE tool suites to enable the use of model-based best practices in DoD acquisition and system life cycle support. This position supports stakeholders and sponsors in the application of MBSE to trade space analysis, design, acquisition, and sustainment. The MBSE executes System Engineering and MBSE processes including system definition, functional decomposition, requirements development, architectural development and analysis, design synthesis, system analysis, data modeling and architecture development, test program development, and sustainment activities. The MBSE researcher also presents technical and program management presentations to government sponsors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create product or system definitions and conduct initial requirements analysis.
  • Author UAF models capturing stakeholder needs and resulting enterprise architectures.
  • Author SysML models capturing system requirements and design.
  • Author data models capturing system data requirements and design.
  • Conduct top-down functional analysis and translate requirements into detailed performance design criteria.
  • Design and build templates to assist Subject Matter Experts in providing critical system information.
  • Conduct product or system design synthesis translating requirements into functional, logical, and physical architectures captured in a SysML model for systems of low complexity.
  • Analyze product or system functionality as defined by requirements.
  • Develop technical reports and diagrams detailing product or system attributes in a SysML model.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Integrate open-system standards into modeling.
  • Define and manage Product Line Engineering (PLE) Methods.
  • Model full-lifecycle system operational capabilities through component system design ensuring completeness of integrated system meeting requirements and quality attributes.
  • Lead modeling efforts integrating cross-discipline engineering team information.
