Job Summary

We study initiation of blood disorders that originate in the blood stem cell using zebrafish and human cell models. We are looking for a motivated team member who will join our nascent lab in this meaningful pursuit. A full-time Staff research assistant position will be available in the laboratory of , Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at University of California, San Francisco. The lab is located in the Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regeneration Medicine and Stem Cell Research on the Parnassus campus. You will perform a variety of routine and specialized laboratory tests and techniques, work with zebrafish and perform studies on human cell lines and primary human cells in tissue culture. The position will be required to perform standard molecular biology techniques, microinjections of zebrafish embryos, microscopy of zebrafish morphology, tissue culture and animal husbandry. Proficiency in molecular cloning, sequence and protein analyses, real-time PCR, flow cytometry, is welcome. Knowledge/experience in cell culture is required, including but not limited to sterile technique, cell passaging, cell counting, cell plating. The position is an excellent opportunity for those interested in later pursuing graduate school, medical school, genetic counseling school, dentistry, nursing, and other health-related programs/professions. Opportunities to shadow Dr Avagyan in clinic may be possible as permitted by the UCSF policies.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Department of Pediatrics is one of the largest and most complex departments in the School of Medicine (SOM). The department is comprised of 17 divisions employing over 300 faculty, 83 fellows, 84 residents, 31 Post Docs and non-faculty academics and 170 staff. The Department has annual clinical income from inpatient and outpatient activities totaling over $90 million and annual extramural funding (contracts and grants) exceeding $40 million. The department ranks 17th in the nation among Pediatric departments for funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The Department's clinical enterprise is based at the 183-bed UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital (BCH) San Francisco, the 191-bed UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland, Mount Zion, Zuckerberg San Francisco General (ZSFG), and at a number of outreach clinics throughout Northern California, providing the Department with an unsurpassed opportunity to meet the needs of infants, children, and young adults throughout the Bay Area. Required Qualifications


  • BA/BS in a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Knowledge/experience in basic cell culture techniques, including sterile technique, cell plating, cell passaging, cell counting, making media, and use light microscopy to look at cells.
