Project/Unit Description
The Secure Information Systems Division (SIS) within the Cybersecurity, Information Protection, and Hardware Evaluation Research Laboratory (CIPHER) is looking to hire a Cloud Engineer for projects revolving around system networking and application virtualization in a security sensitive environment. Candidates must enjoy working with open source software and cutting edge technologies. Candidates will contribute to sponsored research projects and have an opportunity to interact with other scientists and engineers. Candidate should also have the desire to mentor and lead more junior developer teams.
Job Purpose
The Cloud Engineer designs solutions and resolves issues related to application virtualization and cloud infrastructure projects with modest levels of support. The engineer works closely with sponsors on iterative projects in a security sensitive environment supporting a wide array of management tools and system architectures.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and support creation, deployment, and maintenance of cloud-based solutions for various software stacks.
- Design and integrate multi-level, multi-compartment security features into new and existing applications.
- Serve as a resource and subject matter expert for tools and technologies used by SIS teams.
- Serve as a subject matter expert for DevOps solutions that include Ansible using CI/CD Pipelining.
- Serve as a subject matter expert regarding Agile methodology.
- Review code pull-requests and provide feedback to team members to ensure sponsor requirements and code quality thresholds are being met.
- Create level-of-effort (LOE) estimates for assigned tasks and communicate schedule updates to stakeholders.
- Create and maintain documentation for code and system components.
- Run live demonstrations to showcase implemented work to sponsors, answer their questions, and solicit and document feedback.
Additional Responsibilities
- Assess, recommend, develop, and implement Amazon Web Service infrastructure
- Assess, recommend, develop, and implement Citrix infrastructure
- Develop and implement core service infrastructure for network management and security for AWS using external commercial off the shelf tools such as Splunk and Science Logic
- Develop PowerShell scripts from scratch to build windows environments on cloud architecture
- Assess, Document, Engineer, and implement security standards in accordance with NIST 800.53
- Provide engineering level of effort design and implementation trade-off criteria for cloud, VDI, and core service infrastructure based upon NIST 800.53 security controls
Required Minimum Qualifications
- Server OS - Experience with at least one of: MS Server, Linux(RHEL/CentOS/Debian/HP-UX
- Recent experience standing up/building AWS infrastructure
- Experience leveraging Ansible to automate builds
- Experience deploying Citrix infrastructure/Netscalers
- Writing scripts in PowerShell (Experience must go beyond editing existing scripts and using templates)
- Experience with IaaS, PaaS, and Cloud Services such as AWS
- Detailed understanding of secure network and application design
- Willingness to obtain a CISSP certification
Preferred Qualifications
- Active Top Secret Clearance
- Demonstrated understanding of system networking
- Demonstrated ability to take technical ownership of tasks and operate efficiently with little to no direct supervision
- Extreme attention to detail
- Demonstrated ability to integrate security tools with IT infrastructure
- Ability to lead security architecture and engineering activities in a matrixed organization
- Experience identifying and recommending mitigation steps for threats and risks associated with security vulnerabilities in a POA&M
- Experience in developing in multiple distributed environments
- Outstanding writing skills with an ability to convey complex, technical information in an engaging and easily understood manner
- Decisive decision maker

- 9 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer/Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or a software-related technical area.
- 7 years of related experience with a Masters' degree in Computer Science, Computer/Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or a software-related technical area.
- 4 years of related experience with a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computer/Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or a software-related technical area.
U.S. Citizenship Requirements
Due to our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be U.S. Citizens.
Clearance Type Required
Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
