DESCRIPTION

Kick It California (KIC) is part of UC San Diego's Moores Cancer Center and is funded by grants from the California Department of Public Health and Centers for Disease Control. KIC provides free services to help Californians quit using tobacco products. Established in 1992 as the California Smokers' Helpline, KIC was the first statewide, evidence-based, telephone-counseling service for smoking cessation in the U.S. Since then, KIC quit services have been expanded to multiple channels, including web, chat, text, mobile apps, and Alexa skills.

KIC's primary audience is people in California who smoke, vape and use smokeless tobacco. Secondary audiences include: healthcare providers (doctors who directly refer patients to KIC); as well as health departments and community organizations that promote KIC services.

The 211 program is a collaborative project with a consortium of thirteen 211 call centers across the state of California. The 211 program aims to recruit a large number (about 30,000) of low-income tobacco users and members of their households into KIC's tobacco cessation services, to provide detailed reports to partner organizations, to coordinate collaborative efforts among members of the consortium, and to conduct policy analyses to inform decision-making by funding agencies.
