General Purpose of Job: The Department Manager is an advocate for and allocates available resources to promote efficient, effective, safe and compassionate nursing care based on current standards of practice. They promote shared decision-making and professional autonomy by providing input - their own and that of their staff - into executive level decision making by keeping staff informed. The Department Manager coordinates activities between defined areas and provides clinical and administrative leadership and expertise. They facilitate an atmosphere of interactive management and the development of collegial relationships among staff. Essential Duties: This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Associates may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.
- Coordinates the operation of the Emergency Services including personnel, financial, statistical, operational and planning responsibilities of St Lawrence or Main Campus. Oversees the activities and evaluates the performance of the administrative secretaries, nurse educator, and emergency department staff.
- Participates in and facilitates the development and implementation of collaborative practices, standards, protocols and clinical pathways for emergency care.
- Monitors Performance Improvement (PI) activities, identifies potential areas for improvements, communicates identified problems related to care to the appropriate department, and facilitates the resolution of the problem. Coordinates PI activities and reports for Emergency Services. Works with PI personnel and medical staff to develop and maintain an effective, outcome-oriented system that meets JCAHO and ACS standards. Responsibilities include developing specific audit screens dealing with both clinical outcomes and performance improvement areas in nursing or operations.
- Establishes and maintains effective communication with providers and experts throughout the community. Participates in meetings, conferences, seminars, and training programs. Maintains clinical competence in area of expertise.
- Interfaces with organizations outside of Sparrow to develop Sparrow-based outcomes and prevention research. Participates in local, state, and national meetings as appropriate.
- Assists in the education of Associates and the community regarding trauma and injury-prevention.
- Will perform other duties as needed by the Director to achieve the goals and mission of the Sparrow Hospital.
Job Requirements
General Requirements |
* Michigan license as RN, BLS, ACLS, TNCC, and ENPC/Pals required. |
Work Experience |
* Minimum of one year nursing leadership experience * Minimum of two years clinical experience appropriate to specialty * Current clinical knowledge and critical thinking skills necessary to manage a nursing unit. |
Education |
* Registered Nurse with BSN Degree required. * Preferred - MSN |
Specialized Knowledge and Skills |
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills required. * Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively and appropriately communicate with associates, physicians, families, patients and visitors. |
