ABOUT THIS ROLE:
Prince William County, a fast-growing community in the Washington D.C. metro region, is seeking to welcome a highly-motivated Principal Planner to the Planning Office's Community Development Division. The Community Development Division implements activities and projects across the County that enhance capital investment and job creation within target redevelopment areas. This program works with the private sector to identify, promote and implement redevelopment and revitalization strategies of vacant/underused properties, reuse of existing structures, and quality mixed use developments in strategic locations.

The Principal Planner position performs difficult professional and technical work to support investment and revitalization within the County's redevelopment areas. The job duties involve reviewing development cases of broad scope and substantial complexity in targeted areas, recommending zoning text improvements and processing revisions to the Zoning Ordinance, developing written analysis based on best planning practices and the County's Comprehensive Plan, providing recommendations to the Planning Director, Planning Commission, and the Board of County Supervisors, negotiating on behalf of the County, building consensus, and providing staff support to local and regional boards, committees, and commissions. This position requires excellent research, communication, organizational, and analytical skills.

PREFERENCES
The ideal candidate should enjoy working in a creative learning environment, have the ability to meet deadlines, work independently, lead teams, and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
The candidate will have:



  • A Master's Degree in Planning or a related field and AICP certification
  • 5+ years of experience with project management for large or complex land use applications/development projects
  • Direct experience with local Government is a plus.
  • Experience working directly with community groups and elected officials
  • Competency with technical writing and will have extensive experience writing reports and memoranda
  • Experience working in a fast paced environment or a jurisdiction with fast growth
  • An area of focus/interest in planning: Design, Historic preservation, environment, community development etc.

Full time and Evening Public Hearings.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma or G.E.D. and 5 years of related experience.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.

Incumbents may be subjected to travel.
