External Communications Senior Manager

Job Description

The External Communications Senior Manager executes external communications activities for Vertex's approved cystic fibrosis portfolio products and for the company's pipeline programs to support the overall business objectives. The External Communications Senior Manager will also support broader communications team initiatives and projects, as needed, including media relations support, content creation and approvals and executive communications.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Partner with director of external communications and team leaders to develop and execute a strategic communications plan to build excitement for and awareness around Vertex's work in CF and other pipeline programs
  • Contribute to the design and development external communications collateral including, press releases, media materials and Q&A documents
  • Serve as "reporter" on the team to help translate high science into lay-friendly and compelling content
  • Support media relations and executive communications work
  • Partner with the social/digital media team to develop social media plans supporting evergreen content and milestone events in the pipeline
  • Work with internal stakeholders to review/approve materials for external use
  • Collaborate on Internal Communications initiatives to enhance employee engagement
  • Partner with external communications agencies/vendors, as needed


Knowledge and Skills:



  • Strong understanding of pharmaceutical/biotech business model, regulatory and reimbursement processes including communications guidelines and market access environment
  • Experience in developing and implementing external communications plans for medicines pre- and post-launch
  • Strong science writing experience. Ability to understand and accurately communicate complex science concepts
  • Demonstrated experience in healthcare media/PR relations (traditional and social) and/or PR agency experience or in-house at another pharmaceutical/biotech company required
  • Knowledge of healthcare and industry media and reporting trends
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Experience managing multiple projects (timelines, budgets, priorities) simultaneously; flexibility with a results-oriented focus
  • Strong collaboration and influencing skills


Education and Experience:



  • Bachelor's degree in communications, liberal arts, business or science-oriented field (or international equivalent)
  • Typically requires six years of experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience
