Overview

The Director of Nursing Excellence is accountable for leading and supporting a culture of nursing excellence and professional practice development at UPH - St. Luke's Hospital. The Director of Nursing Excellence will report directly to the Chief Nursing Officer, partnering closely with the Director, Nursing Operations and nursing leadership to support exemplary professional practice across the organization. The Director of Nursing Excellence will influence the highest quality of care and patient outcomes through evidence-based professional practice, innovation, shared governance, and team member engagement.

The Director of Nursing Excellence will provide direct oversight to Nursing Research and Innovation, Clinical Informatics, Professional Practice and Development, including Nurse Residency, Advanced Practice Nurses, Registered Nurse Educators, and the Magnet Program Manager and Journey to Magnet Excellence framework.

Responsibilities

Leadership

  • Provides leadership in the development, implementation, and evaluation of professional nursing practice, consistent with the established strategic priorities, goals, and objectives.
  • Synthesizes and integrates divergent viewpoints for the good of the organization. Provides visionary thinking on issues that impact the organization.
  • Establishes mechanisms that provide for early identification and mentoring of staff with leadership potential.
  • Represents UPH - St. Luke's Hospital on health-related topics and issues through community involvement, Board participation, and UPH councils and committees.
  • Serves as a professional role model and mentor to future nursing leaders. A Servant Leader.

Communication

  • Provides for two-way conversations between team members and leadership.
  • Builds trusting, collaborative relationships with team members, peers, physicians, and administration to advance the core inpatient business strategy.
  • Communicates a shared vision regarding the nursing enterprise strategic priorities.
  • Engages team members in shared decision-making by facilitating support of Shared Governance Model and direct care team member engagement.
  • Builds partnerships that support and promote care coordination and case management strategies.
  • Ensures compliance with the state Nurse Practice Act, state Board of Nursing regulations, and regulatory agencies' standards.

Evidence-Based Professional Practice

  • Supports Journey to Magnet Excellence
  • Fosters a culture of interprofessional collaboration through leadership and sustainment of Shared Governance Model, aligning with organizational and nursing enterprise goals and strategy.
  • Works with the Magnet Program Manager and Chief Nursing Officer with:
    • The submission process and documentation requirements for the application, re-designation evidence submission, annual and interim reports, and the Demographic Data Collection Tool (DDCT) to meet all established deadlines set forth by the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program.
    • The regular evaluation of the Nursing Professional Practice Model (PPM) and Shared Governance Model to ensure they provide a strong and relevant foundation for professional nursing practice and integrated into daily nursing practice.
  • Role models transformational leadership skills for strengthening the professional role of nursing.
  • Serves as a change agent for evidence-based practice, assisting others in understanding the importance, necessity, impact, and process of change. Supports staff during times of difficult transitions.
  • Serves as a nursing leader representative on organizational and/or hospital councils and committees to promote interprofessional, evidence-based, quality clinical patient care.
  • Contributes to UPH Nursing Enterprise Strategic Priorities as a member of nursing leadership team.
  • Provide oversight for the implementation, review, and evaluation of evidence-based policies and procedures.
  • Develops annual and multiyear capital budget to support Nursing Excellence.
  • Develops annual operational budget to support Nursing Excellence strategic plan.
  • Interprets information from evidence-based nursing literature and research. Use research findings for the establishment of standards, practices, and patient care models in the organization.
  • Articulates the organization's quality improvement program and goals. Sets target outcomes that are evidence-based.
  • Analyzes the root causes of variation from quality standards.
  • Provides oversight and ensures that written organizational clinical policies and procedures are reviewed and updated in accordance with evidence-based practice standards.

Qualifications
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing education program.
  • Master's degree in nursing, health administration, or business
  • Five to seven years of professional experience
  • Two to three years of leadership experience with evidence of successful change management.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Iowa or compact state.
  • Knowledgeable about patient care and nursing practice across service lines and management principles and practices including performance management and performance improvement.
  • Knowledge of the current healthcare environment and its impact on nursing practice
  • Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
